Kiwa (Māori: Guardian of the sea)

This new series of penguin mirror balloons floated from the ceiling to the ground.

Their names are drawn from regions where penguins naturally live – including Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia, the Falkland Islands, Namibia, Angola, Peru, and Chile. Traditional and indigenous names were chosen for their meanings and for how they resonate with the characteristics of each sculpture. The first of the series is Kiwa, a Māori name meaning guardian of the sea.

Kiwa stands at the edge of a rectangular, light-coloured stone, as if gazing out at the sea. Looking down at the little creature, prompts us not only to change our perspective. It also encourages us to reconsider our relationship to environment, how we can perhaps better adapt to the needs of nature rather than dominating it.
